The last couple of weeks, I mentioned that there have been times when thought is given about Sunday nights. Discussions are held. Do we continue to have services on Sunday nights? People vote by their attendance and attendance is low. So, do we cancel Sunday night services like many churches have done? I love Sunday nights… they are special…that is why I want to continue having them. We have worship…we have prayer…we have fellowship. Some churches have gone to having Small Groups. These groups meet in different places to study God’s Word together. Like many things, they start out great and then they fizzle. I don’t believe Sunday night Small Groups is the answer. Josh Presley of Lifeway recently wrote about the troubles with Small Groups. He mentioned three troubles that Small Groups face. First, a lack of a clear purpose. Josh wrote “Aiming at nothing and in the end they might just accomplish that. Nothing.” Second, a lack of understanding. Josh found “that most people are more likely to come to our Sunday school or worship service first.” Many people feel much more “at home” in a worship service than in someone’s living room. Third, a lack of multiplication. Small Groups often do not grow. They become a club and not an outreach tool. The purpose of the Church is to make disciples of Jesus Christ. In other words, to multiply. We are to multiply…to duplicate ourselves…to make disciples…to grow God’s Kingdom. Fulfilling the Great Commission is our goal! Let’s not miss the mark. Jesus is sending us out to expand His Kingdom in our community.
