When you read this, Christmas will be past. For most of us the time of opening presents will be over and we will be left to ponder what just happened. For some it will be a time of reflection, others will be hoping just to get through the day and then the week ahead as they are missing a loved one at Christmas for the first time. Others will be basking in the joy of family and children and just general good cheer.
The belief in Christmas requires faith. Faith that a baby was born in Bethlehem. Faith that God cares about us so much that He will do as He promises. Faith that in each one of us borns a spark of the goodness of God. Now imagine if all was taken away. All the good. All the love. Everything. Where is your belief? What is your faith based upon? Carved on the walls of a concentration camp were these words –
I believe in the sun, even though it doesn’t shine, I believe in love, even when it isn’t shown, I believe in God, even when He doesn’t speak.
I wonder who could have carved these words and what they had been through to reach this point? What
horrors had they seen and experienced? Yet they chose to believe in God. That is my choice and as the New Year approaches I will renew my commitment to Christ and share His love. I will strive to live so words such as these will not have to be penned. I will choose to live for and believe in that which I can not see – God!
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble at its swelling. Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!” The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. Psalm 46:1-3,10-11
