As a believer and follower of Christ I find that I spend a great deal of time thinking about worship. You might think that is because my title is Associate Pastor of Worship and you would be partially right. I believe that each and every Christian should spend a lot of time thinking about worship. In our present world I am afraid we have diluted the word worship to mean something it is not. Worship has nothing to do with music and musical styles. So when we equate worship with our feelings we get from the music inadvertantly, we have made worship about us. The music, our service to God even our offering we give are acts of worship – again depending on our heart. Webster’s dictionary from 1828 defines worship as “Worship is to honor with extravagant love and extreme submission.” Nothing about service order, music or the other things we clutter with worship. Jesus said it even more simply in
John 4:23-24 But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”
We as believers must get away from the idea that the elements of worship are worship and come to the belief that it is soley the worthiness of God that brings the heart its desire to worship. We worship God because He is God. Through the worthiness of God He pours His wealth upon us and sometimes we worship the wealth of God and not His worthiness. Worship of God encompasses our entire being every moment of every day.
