Notes From Mark

Who do you compare yourself to? Have you thought something like this “If I am as good as my neighbor then that’s pretty good!? Or maybe I just need to try harder to see God and His benefits. Or maybe even “My actions aren’t really all that bad.” So often we compare ourselves to one another because it makes us feel better. The Bible tells us that only the holy will see God. In order to be holy we must be perfect. Because none of us is perfect then we lower the standards and we check out how we are doing based on those around us. But God said “You must be perfect even as your Father in heaven is perfect.” (Matt. 5:48). We must remember that it is God who has set the standard and His standard has not and will not change. So we reset our standard to God. Our striving in this life is to be like God, nothing less is acceptable. It is a constant striving but one that bears fruit in your life. To love as God loves, to think as God thinks, to have the wants and desires of God. When our life is focused on these things our very being changes. Will we be perfect? No. Will that in and of itself make us acceptable to God? No. But when we so live and it is done with the grace a sacrifice of Christ the miracle occurs and God will see us a perfect, because we have a perfect Savior.

A wise person will understand what to do but a foolish person is dishonest. Fools don’t care if they sin, but honest people work at being right. Proverbs 14:8-9 NCV
