Matthew 5:13 “You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet. (ESV)
For the past 8 years I have had the opportunity to minister differently by coaching at local high schools. It has given me many different blessings and growing experiences. First, it has given me a way to share gifts that God has given me to teach and train young men both within sports that I love as well as being a Christian influence in and around their lives. Second, it has given me an opportunity to be around non-church people. If you work at a church as your vocation, many times, if you don’t make an intentional focus to be around non-church people, it won’t happen. Third, I have had the opportunity to share the sideline, office and many hours on school buses with some of the most real men in my life. Some have been Christian, some have not, but all have been professional and even open to spiritual discussions when they came up.
There are many more blessings and even some heartache that have come with using your abilities and talents outside of the walls of the church and who knows how long I will have this opportunity. I have been blessed with this opportunity and even if it ended, I know that God will open up a door for myself to be salt and light in areas not only within the church but outside her walls too.
